2010: Start of a New Year

Well, it's now 2010, time for my annual blog entry [grin]

My plans for this year are going to be dominated by a cruise to the Holy Land in the Steps of the Apostles cruise in October.  I may not get the time and or cash to do much in the line of camping this year.  However, that doesn't mean that I'll be out of the loop.

In 2008, I asked Rachel what was the earliest and latest she'd gone canoeing.  Not unsurprisingly, she had done earlier and later trips than I (one of the advantages to actually owning a canoe as opposed to renting/borrowing one, I suppose).  We discussed which months we had gone canoeing in, and joked about going each month.  Although we didn't follow through with it, we did go canoeing that December.  I'm going to see if she wants to try doing every month this year.  Mind you, it is currently -12C and the wind is howling like a banshee.

Another event that I plan to go to is the Outdoor Adventure Show.  Mike and I have been attending this show for the past couple of years now.  I met Les Stroud, a.k.a. Survivorman, at the show, and last year, I was introduced to the concept of the bridge hammock.  Unlike a regular hammock, which bends your body like a banana and causes it to settle in the middle of the hammock, the bridge hammock allows you to sleep flat.  It works like a suspension bridge.  Instead of hanging the sleeping area from the head and foot, the sleeping area hangs from side to side from two main suspension cables, which run from head to foot.  This means that the sleeping area can be flat, like the roadbed on a suspension bridge.  I may invest in one this year.

I'm sure there will be a large trip like last year's August Algonquin Adventure, along with the occasional spontaneous trip.  I'd like to try a Grand River trip.  It's close enough for a day trip, or possibly an overnighter.

Another project I'm going to be plugging away on, is a series of videos or animations on camping skills, like map and compass use, portaging, etc.

Anyways, I'm looking forward to this year.  I'll try and post more often.

I have had a misunderstanding.

I have had a misunderstanding regarding my paycheque.  I was under the impression that holiday pay was being removed from my paycheque as is standard, yielding a fixed number of paid vacation days available.  However, my holiday pay is paid to me on the fly.  Thus, I don't have any paid vacation days.

So, I don't have to worry about taking too many days on a camping trip and not having enough for my cruise.  I don't have any to begin with.
